Our History

History Of Miss Ebony Burlesque Universe Pageant

Miss Ebony Burlesque Universe is an international celebration of Black glamour, cultural excellence, and the timeless art of burlesque.

Founded by classic burlesque performer, producer, and pageant director Nomi Foxxx, the pageant began as Mx. Ebony Burlesque Atlanta, celebrating local Black burlesque artistry. As its vision expanded, it evolved into Mx. Ebony Burlesque Georgia, welcoming performers from across the state. Today, that vision has grown once again into Miss Ebony Burlesque Universe—an international pageant dedicated to honoring and celebrating the artistry, glamour, and cultural legacy of Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and LGBTQ+ burlesque performers from around the world.

Each year, distinguished contestants gather to compete for one of burlesque's highest honors. Contestants are judged on burlesque performance, swimwear, glamour, poise, interview, cultural expression, and their commitment to carrying forward the rich legacy of Black burlesque.

Miss Ebony Burlesque Universe proudly calls Philadelphia, Pennsylvania its home—a city with a profound legacy in Black entertainment and culture. Philadelphia was home to the legendary Standard Theatre, where many Black performers on the Chitlin' Circuit captivated audiences during an era when opportunities elsewhere were limited. That history of resilience, artistry, and excellence continues to inspire our stage today.

More than a competition, Miss Ebony Burlesque Universe is a celebration of heritage, glamour, and community. It exists to preserve the legacy of Black burlesque while creating new opportunities for today's performers to be seen, celebrated, and crowned.

From Atlanta... to Georgia... to the Universe, our mission has remained the same: to honor the past, celebrate the present, and crown the future of Black burlesque.

Welcome to the Universe.
